The Identity of the Unknown; -between what the skin encloses and what it excludes-

This project focused on the concept of perception and when we perceive something to be different from what we’re accustomed to, we consider it a foreign body/something inhumane and grow an irrational fear towards it without considering the similarities in species homogeneity.

The visual aspect of how we perceive and how we interpret what we perceive plays on the actuality of how we function as human beings.

We perceive things we have no knowledge about usually with conceptual or abstract thinking, reflective thinking, or non-directed or associative thinking.

I wanted to show my subject (the Other) in what would be their relaxed state, with no clear acknowledgement that they are being watched. They then start to notice that they have an onlooker and begin to show curiosity. Once in full acknowledgement of the audience, they begin to feel shy, almost embarrassed because of the constant perception. The audience is assumed a reaction of strange-ness and fear, and the subject feels that judgement on them, and begin to retaliate, turning away from the onlookers. They begin to feel agony, frustration, almost despair from how they’re being perceived in their natural state as they try to diminish, almost lessen themselves, clear that there is no understanding or even an attempt at understanding between the subject and the audience.

‘Agitation, frustration, anguish and even maniacal laughter manifest themselves

in the expressions and gestures of the ‘soul’.’- Bill Viola
